Camping in Central Oregon

We went camping this weekend, in central Oregon. We've only been down towards Bend once in the past year, and there are some great hikes and campgrounds in that area so we thought we'd check it out.

Saturday was a beautiful day - in the high 70s - and we had clear views of Mt. Jefferson, the Three Sisters and other mountains. The campground we stayed at was practically empty. It was nice to not be annoyed by other campers and not worry about our own little campers annoying others around us.

This is Mt. Jefferson...

This is Mt. Bachelor - a big ski area for those living in central Oregon

This is looking at South Sister and to the right you can see Middle Sister

I think this is Broken Top

These are trees...I don't know why, but when I looked up at them I was inspired to take a picture.

We spent some time at the beach at Elk Lake. It's not a big lake, but there were several sailboats (big ones) sailing on the lake. It was a little funny to watch them sail the length of the lake, turn around and sail to the other end. They just did this over and over.

This is looking at South Sister across the lake.

Sydney caught several crayfish

We attempted to get a family photo at our campsite...this one is so good of everyone except me and my closed eyes!

Here is take #2

Mmmm...jiffy pop!
We woke up to chilly temperatures - it must have been in the high 30s or low 40s. Thankfully most of us were warm all night in our sleeping bags.

This was the volcanic peak we could see from our campsite. I think the sign I read called it Red Crater...the picture in the evening depicts this name perfectly!

This is Mt. Washington

And this is the North Sister and Middle Sister

This is Mt. Washington on the left (the really pointy one). What you see in the foreground is rock from a lava flow. It was very barren, but very interesting to see.

Here we are standing on top of the Dee Wright Observatory - a structure built from the lava rocks. It's cool to go inside. There are windows and through each one you have a perfect view of the different mountains and buttes in the area. This is located at the top of McKenzie Pass which is closed during the winter months.

Here is a close up of the glacier on Middle Sister.
What did you do this weekend?

  2. We were actually south west of Sisters....from Bend you drove 35 miles west on the Cascade Lakes Highway. We did drive through Sisters on Sunday morning (stopped and got a donut), but I figured they were at church. It's a cute little town...not much was open since it was Sunday morning.
