Our Curriculum

I'm pretty sure this is a post most people could care less about, unless you are really curious about homeschool curriculums. I'm not even quite sure why I'm taking the time to post this, except I do love our curriculum and when I love something, I like to share it with others.

When choosing a curriculum, I was looking for something that was structured enough to offer me a starting point, but flexible enough to allow for my own creativity and ideas. I also really wanted something I could do with both girls at the same time, and something that was reading based since we all enjoy reading so much.

As I researched curriculums, one kept standing out from the rest and appealed to me more than others....Five in a Row. The basic idea is that you read a children's book five days in a row, and look at it/discuss it from a different angle each day. The chosen stories are from all over the world thus representing a great geographical component. Each story also touches on at least one, if not many, Christian character traits.

We are really enjoying the stories and all the lessons we are learning through them. I found another great resource, www.homeschoolshare.com, that has great ideas and resources for lapbooks. We've made a lapbook for each story so far and I put little video clips of them for those of you who are really bored.

In addition to our Five in a Row stories, we are doing math (Singapore Math), phonics, reading, writing, spelling and Bible (various resources).

  3. I enjoy the curriculum talk, too :) We also use Singapore (I get credit for introducing it to Kelly...) and I really like it. I don't use the textbook really just go straight to the workbook. I'm sure when they're older I may need to use it more but it seemed like an excess at this point. I've heard of Five in a Row but haven't really looked into it...sounds neat, though!
