15 More hours!

Jill comes back tonight at 11pm. It's only been 5 days and 4 nights but it feels like 2 weeks. I spend a good amount of time with the kids each day (remember, I have no friends and no hobbies that I do alone). And since Im not into video games (which makes me the only male under 40 in our church that isnt obsessed with video games...), Im not one of those tv-dads that never plays with their kids. But I learned some things these past 5 days:

  • I need a break from my kids
  • Kayleigh and Sydney get slap-happy way too easily
  • My kids need to expand their breakfast preferences (Cheerios and oatmeal every day is lame)
  • Home schooling is not easy (I prefer lecturing to college kids over teaching fractions to a 5 year old).
  • Here is how Kayleigh would answer in a game show if I was their usual teacher:

    • And here is how smart-alec Sydney would answer:

    • I cant work from home. People who do either dont have kids, dont really 'work', or have a sound-proof airtight vault for their home office.
    • Laundry is easy, but I cant figure out how Jill folds things so well. I just cant fold anything in a way that doesnt make it look like it randomly fell from a great height and was then shaped into a square by an animal.
    • It's hard to find time to exercise when you're a single parent. But at least I can jog with the girls now (Kayleigh is able to ride her bike at an 8 min mile pace now).
    • Our girls look way cuter and more obedient on the blog, in real life they are messy and extremely lazy.
    • I cant do pigtails or pony tails well. In fact I dont know how to use a hairbrush. I havent needed a hairbrush since high school. Someone at church noticed my 'good effort' on the girls hair but I had to admit it was pretty weak.
    • Im sick of eating cheese and crackers for 3 meals each day. I need Jill to get groceries.
    • The girls will fight to the death over the honor and privilege of getting the mail -who knew?
    • Jill and I make a good team. I never want to be a single parent. Being a parent of one is hard. But, perhaps Im a wimp, after all, "One is enough, when it's you."

Im sure Jill will have lots to post when she gets back. She did send me one picture from her cell phone while she was in Mexico (this was taken in the orphanage courtyard):

    2. Kevin, You didn't let me down. Thanks for making me laugh and laugh. It is good to be a Mr. Mom for a few days to make it very clear why you are a Dad and work outside the home. Now you know why Jill needs a break every so often. You are a terrific Dad though and I do appreciate all you do with those precious girls and for them. Praying mommy home!! hugs
      your loving Mother-in-law!!!!

    3. I've been waiting to see if you were going to do your blog thing while Jill was away and you didn't disappoint! I'm so glad you understand and appreciate the incredibly difficult job of mothering and I'm sure that Jill will be very happy to read all the things you've discovered this weekend. Us Mommas aren't so wimpy after all! When you come here in June, I'll be happy to give you some laundry folding lessons, but to be honest, you never did get that concept growing up either.
      Welcome home, Jill!

    4. The boys have started to catch on to the fact that other people don't have oatmeal every day for breakfast. Not cool. I've been asked to find something "colder" for them during the summer. I'm pretty sure if we ever have a girl I will need to take lessons in hair doing so I give you credit for trying! See you all soon!

    5. Your kids eat oatmeal every day? I figured you would be forcing your chicken eggs down them. Maybe put some red dye in the oatmeal, that will change it up a bit. I think we should adopt the german breakfast tradition of cheese and cold-cuts. They just have meat and cheese every morning. None of this cereal grain garbage (who invented the American milk-covered cereal idea anyway? it's lame and as far as I know, we are the only country that does this).
