We always manage to find new things to do and explore when we are in Central Oregon and this time was no different. We visited the National Newberry Volcanic Monument (which has never been open before during our visits).
Can you see the remains of the lava flow?
In the picture below you can see trails through the lava flow that we eventually walked.
Then we went to check of the Lava River Cave - a 1 mile cave you can walk through that is 80 feet below the ground. It was cold in there - about 42 degrees. We had some headlamps, but also rented a lantern to help with the light (and it put off heat so Kayleigh carried it most of the way!)
It was pitch black in there - we took some pictures with a flash so we could later see what it looked like.
