Wanting to escape the predicted 90 degree heat in the Portland area, we piled into the car and headed to the northern most part of our state - Astoria, OR - where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean. It's also where the movies The Goonies and Kindergarten Cop were filmed. We've been there a couple times before, and ultimately our goal was to get to a beach, so we didn't do much in Astoria other than visit the column tower.
With the blue, clear skies, it was a great day to be there. From the top, there are some great views.
This is Syd and I looking down at Kevin and Kay...do you see them on the grass?
After eating our lunch, we hopped back into the car and headed to a nearby state park for some beach time. It was quite uncrowded and just a gorgeous day to be there. Unlike a lot of Oregon beaches, this one was just sand - no big rock formations, so no tide pools.
We made sand castles, went for walks, played guitar, jumped waves and read books. It was very relaxing.
After a couple hours we hopped back into the car and drove south to check out another beach area we had recently heard about - Hug Point. There are caves, tide pools, a couple beaches and a waterfall. Be sure to click on the link because you can see a cool pic of the waterfall. I didn't get any because there wasn't much water flowing and there were lots of people around it.
That was the downfall of this place....lots and lots of people. We stayed about an hour and were there at low tide so we got to see lots of starfish. It will be fun to go back some weekday when it's not so crowded and explore more. The caves were pretty cool.
such a fun day!!!!
