You are not going to believe what we did yesterday.
We drove an hour west to Munising...we've been there many times. It's where Pictured Rocks National Park starts. We were just going to go see what one of our favorite spots looked like in Winter. But when we got there we realized the entire bay was frozen over. And we've been wanting to get over to Grand Island (the ferry is quite expensive and we weren't brave enough to kayak over this past summer).
So we walked across Lake Superior to the island. It was about a mile and it was so cool. We weren't the only ones doing it...there were snowmobiles and other walkers.
But check out these pictures (there are LOTS!!!)
First we walked by some ice fishers.
And this is what we were walking towards.
Some cool pictures of the ice
We finally made it!
We saw this lighthouse this past summer while on a boat tour. It's called Channel Lighthouse and is no longer operational.
And here's a close up of the lighthouse
Now...you have to realize that even when we got to the island, we were completely standing on the Lake. These rock cliffs are just that...cliffs. There is no shoreline here. Even the lighthouse sits right on the lake. There is a wall built in the front of the lighthouse to protect it from the waves.
So here's a look inside the "icicle cave"
This is looking back out to the lake from inside the icicle caves
Of course we had to stop for hot chocolate...
Sydney found this cool ice formation that had a perfect spot for her to sit in. She called it her "resting chair" and at the end of it all, she said this was her favorite part.
Here are a couple pictures to give you a better overall idea of the part of the lake we crossed...these were taken from the island side. And the expanse you see straight ahead is the main part of Lake Superior.
Way cool pictures! The "icicle caves" are the best! I wish we could be up there to go see that stuff too! We'll just have to move up there so we can enjoy the beauty again!
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable pictures!! awesome!!! I want to do that next year when we come. Thanks for sharing,

ReplyDeleteHoly cow. Seriously I just had a mini panic attack just looking at the pictures. My Hubby is from MN so driving, fishing, walking, snowmowbiling, etc is all "normal" to him but there is just something about being on a frozen lake that FREAKS me out. The photos are BEAUTIFUL, really amazing. For a moment it makes me want to do it, that needs to be on my Bucket List. LOL! Thank you for sharing, what a great family experience!!!
