Our real desire in going choosing Vancouver Island as our vacation destination was to see the west coast of the island. Here are a couple maps so you can visualize....

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to get there. We chose Ucluelet over Tofino solely based on the price of lodging. Little did we know our already pricey vacation was going to get more pricey. Tofino appears to be a little more resorty....we just needed family friendly.
The drive between Victoria and Ucluelet is beautiful. It is far more mountainous than I imagined and the mountains are quite steep. Unfortunately on our way there, the weather changed from sunny to cloudy and rainy.
This first picture is an arial view of Ucluelet harbor with the broken islands in the background. There are many whale watching boats that take tourists out to these islands to see resident pods of whales.

These are some of the pictures I took while driving to and from Ucluelet.
And here are a couple videos so you can see how steep the mountains are and how curvy the roads are. Sydney threw up shortly after I took these videos.
I think your 3 readers need to appreciate the costs we are ae talking about (all in US dollars, which are less than Canadian now): $7 for a box a cereal, $8 for a small package of cold-cuts, $400 for 4 people to do a 3 hour whale watch, $89 per person for a 3 hour fishing trip (plus license fee), $4.75 for a gallon of gas, $1.25 for a candy bar, $12 for the average (bad tasting) cheesburger. And $20 to park at the beach. The whole island is a tourist trap. Beware all those that cross the sound; you need to add 30-40% to what things cost here before you'll be close to the anticipated price.
ReplyDeleteYes dear...I was going to get to examples in a future post.
ReplyDeleteAnd the candy bars - they were $2 each!
Yikes! I remember the days (not long ago) when the US dollar was so strong in Canada that we'd go there all the time for bargains. I can't believe the prices you quoted. I hope it's not like that in Ireland.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pictures. The prices for things are outrageous. Can't beleive the cost for a whale watch.
