Obsidian Overflow by Sydney

Today we went to Newberry Caldera and saw the obsidian lava flow. There we found some obsidian. It was very pretty.

Some of the rocks had stripes.

There was also a place that looked like a bunch of obsidian bubbled out of the ground and dried in a big clump.

We also got some pieces that had been chipped off the big clump and brought them home.

This one looks like a piece of foam and it felt like one too. You can chip pieces off it.

This one is super, super light. This is called pumice. It is lighter than a sponge.

This is me (and my sister) standing next to one of the big chunks of obsidian. It is very smooth. I wish I could take it home and put it in my backyard.

The End.

  1. Sydney, that is so cool! Thanks for sharing about lava rocks. I have seen a volcano in Costa Rica. It was called Arenal and was really neat. It smelled a little stinky at the top because of the sulfur. Glad you had fun!

  4. Very interesting, Sydney! You did a great job describing everything. I learned a lot from you today. Maybe next time we come out there you can take us there. It's very beautiful. Too bad you couldn't take that big piece home with you- it would have looked great in your yard! I think you're going to be a scientist when you grow up!
